🎓 Students of the Faculty Actively Participate in the XXI International Scientific Conference “Youth and Progress in Biology”

From April 28 to May 1, 2025, the Faculty of Biology of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv hosted the XXI International Scientific Conference for Students and Postgraduates “Youth and Progress in Biology”, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology.

Students, postgraduate researchers, and faculty members from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and the Department of Biology and Ecology of our faculty took active part in the conference. Young scientists presented the results of their research through oral and poster presentations, demonstrating a high level of academic preparation and engagement with modern biological challenges.

🔬 Researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology delivered presentations on a wide range of topics, including:

  • The use of solvatochromic fluorescent dyes for the detection of amyloid fibrils;

  • Effects of metal ions on biochemical and physiological parameters of plants;

  • Influence of dietary components (alpha-ketoglutarate and broccoli sprouts) on metabolic outcomes in animals fed a high-calorie diet;

  • Behavioral and biochemical changes in mice under different stress models, and sex-based differences in stress responses;

  • Age-related morphological changes in the reproductive and digestive systems of Drosophila melanogaster.

🏅 Awards received:

🗣 Oral presentations:

  • Section “Biochemistry”:
    Third Place – PhD students Maryan Ivanochko and Vitalii Derkachov (supervisors: Prof. Volodymyr Lushchak and Prof. Mariia Bailiak), and Assistant Oleh Demianchuk.

  • Section “Human and Animal Physiology, Biomedicine”:
    Third Place – Master’s student Anna Okhovych (supervisor: Prof. Mariia Bailiak);
    Second Place – PhD student Vladyslav Berezovskyi (supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Oleh Lushchak);
    First Place – PhD student Vitalii Balatskyi (supervisor: Prof. Volodymyr Lushchak).

📌 Poster presentations – First Degree Diplomas:

  • Petro Hats and Illia Yatsyna (4th year students) – Section “Biophysics” (supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Volodymyr Shvadchak);

  • Viktoriia Zadarko (3rd year) and Uliana Kilchytska (4th year) – Section “Plant Physiology” (supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Viktor Husak).

🌿 The Department of Biology and Ecology also successfully represented our university in the sections of Zoology and Botany.
Participants were supervised by Assoc. Prof. Andrii Zamoroka (6 students) and Assoc. Prof. Nadiia Kapets (1 student). All students delivered oral presentations on the following research areas:

  • DNA barcoding and molecular systematics in insects;

  • Cytogenetic studies and their taxonomic relevance in entomological research;

  • Faunistic studies of insects in the Carpathian region;

  • Synanthropization of birds in Ivano-Frankivsk;

  • Lichen biota diversity in the Carpathians.

🏅 Awards received:

  • Oleksandr Piddubnyi (2nd year) – First Degree Diploma;

  • Viktoriia Malanii (3rd year)  and Anna Donets (2nd year)– Second Degree Diploma;

  • Nadiia Verezhak (Master’s, 1st year),  Yaroslav-Yurii Kasitskyi (3rd year), Yevhenii Prylutskyi (4th year) – Third Degree Diplomas.

👏 We also acknowledge students who actively participated but did not receive awards: Anastasiia Tkachyk (Master’s, Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology), Anna Mokhniak and Mariia Bureiko (2nd year, Department of Biology and Ecology). Your engagement provided invaluable experience and lasting impressions.

This conference served not only as a scientific forum, but also as an inspiring space for sharing ideas, gaining feedback, and building professional connections.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the organizers of the event and to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for enabling us to work, study, and do science in a free country.

We are proud of the achievements of our young researchers and wish them continued success in their scientific endeavors!
